About this object
A store ledger bound in tan buckram. Its spine is stamped in black capitals, Ledger above and Bodwell Granite Co. Jonesboro Me. below. The cloth is worn, and torn across the middle of the spine.
Inside, each customer has a page of their own, numbered at the top corner. The clerk wrote in a flowing copperplate hand on paper ruled in red and blue: the date, the goods, a column of numbers and the amount on the left; payments on the right; and, where an account was settled and carried forward, the word “Balance” in red ink.
Page 106 is headed for Miss … Smith (her first name is hard to read). Goods charged to her include hose, a vest, sugar, shoes, chocolate, jelly, ribbon, gingham and ham.
Page 256 is the account of W. J. Mawhinney, with entries from 1903 to 1905. His credits include “By Hauling Flour”, “By Freight” and “By Team Hire”, as well as “By Cash”.
